Fed: time not right for simplistic shift on boatpeople - Gillard

Opposition immigration spokeswoman JULIA GILLARD says it's not the right time for a
simplistic change in Labor's policy on boat people.

She was speaking after fellow frontbencher CARMEN LAWRENCE called for a change in the
controversial policy, saying the party's supporters expected a more compassionate approach.

But Ms GILLARD told ABC radio that it is time for debate rather than simplistic change
on what Labor's policy should be in all sorts of areas.
