FED: Government, Democrats reach deal on preamble

CANBERRA, Aug 11 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard has agreed to take the word mateship out
of the constitutional preamble to be put to the republic referendum in November.

Mr Howard said he had agreed to the Australian Democrats request to remove mateship to
ensure the legislation passed parliament this week so the referendum could go ahead on
November 6.
