Fed: Hollingworth should step down, says ethics expert
An ethics expert says Governor-General PETER HOLLINGWORTH should step down after admittinghe wasn't up to dealing with sexual abuse claims as a new Anglican archbishop in 1990.
Dr TREVOR JORDAN, senior lecturer in applied ethics at the Queensland University ofTechnology, says Dr HOLLINGWORTH's performance on ABC TV's Australian Story program raisesserious questions about his ability to fulfil his vice regal duties.
Dr HOLLINGWORTH said that as a new archbishop in 1990 he was on a steep learning curveand did not have his "finger on all of the schools", following claims he did not adequatelyrespond to complaints of abuse at Toowoomba Preparatory School.
Dr JORDAN says it's clear that when Dr HOLLINGWORTH was Archbishop of Brisbane he lackedinsight and sensitivity in dealing with allegations of sexual abuse.
And he says he doesn't think Australia can afford to have a Governor-General who mightnot be on top of things at some important stage.
Dr JORDAN is the chair of the Esther Trust, an organisation that provides advocacyand support to victims of sexual abuse in faith communities.
Dr HOLLINGWORTH'S successor as Anglican archbishop of Brisbane, PHILLIP ASPINALL, hasscheduled a news conference for later today.
Dr HOLLINGWORTH is also due to issue a detailed statement in Canberra this afternoon.
